Frescoes in world heritage cave temple of Sri Lanka deteriorating

May 19, Dambulla: The frescoes at the World Heritage Dambulla cave temple (Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya) are deteriorating, a Sri Lankan website reported.

“The wall frescoes and ceiling frescoes that are spread over an area of about 2000 sq. ft are facing destruction due to neglect,” the Lanka Truth website reported adding that the frescoes are not being conserved for the last ten years as expected.

Frescoes have been damaged by insects, some have been discoloured and some frescoes had foreign matter on their surface, the report said.

Dambulla cave temple, which was under the Department of Archeology earlier, is now under the custodianship of Central Cultural Fund.

“However, due to pressure from various quarters the Central Cultural Fund too withdrew from the responsibility of managing it. Thereafter, no institution has taken the responsibility for the cave temple,” the website reported.
