The monsoon forests north of Bangkok are home to wild animals and bold winemakers alike, writes Kerry van der Jagt.

LONG before Leonardo DiCaprio put Phuket on the map in The Beach, before the rise of day spas in Chiang Mai or yoga retreats on Koh Samui, the folk of Bangkok had their own escape hatch: the Khao Yai hills, a wilderness deep within the Dongrek mountain range, 200 kilometres north-east of the city.
