Heritage gallery to unfold CST story

MUMBAI: A unique Heritage Gallery was on Friday commissioned inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), the headquarters of the Central Railway (CR).

CST itself is a World Heritage Site. CR General Manager B B Modgil inaugurated the gallery. The Heritage Gallery aims to put the vision and pioneering effort in the face of extreme adversity of the founding fathers of the Railways in proper perspective so that today’s generation appreciates the effort.

This gallery consists of replicas of the original drawings of FW Stevens, the chief architect of CST, an article of 16th April 1853 about the inauguration of the first train that ran from Boribunder to Tannah (Thane), priceless photographs and documents from the Archives, Great Indian Peninsula Railway advertisements about the prestigious trains, synergic growth of Railways and Mumbai through photographs, besides Steam and other engine models.

Modgil’s foresight and vision gave the initial impetus and inspiration for creating this gallery which has been brought to its logical conclusion by M C Chauhan, Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division, and his dedicated team of officers and staff. Dr Sadashiv V Gorakhshkar, eminent museologist of Mumbai helped with the research work and concept of the museum design and Kiran Kalamdani a Pune-based designer provided the basic concept plan of the gallery.
