Despite concerns from tour operators and hoteliers, the US$86 million expansion project for Laos’ Luang Prabang Airport will proceed as planned.

There were fears that the project will affect the appeal of the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the Lao National Tourism Administration has explained that due to budget constraints, they are not able to build a new airport outside the city.

The expansion project includes a new 9,800-square-metre passenger terminal and a new 3,000-metre runway that will be able to accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft.

The project is expected to be completed by 2013.
