Rain blamed for Pompeii collapses

Another two walls have collapsed in Italy’s ancient city of Pompeii.

Officials at the city, which was buried in a volcanic eruption in 79AD, say heavy rain is eroding what is left of the ancient Roman site.

There have been two incidents of walls collapsing this week, but officials say the walls were not of artistic value.

Three weeks ago the House of Gladiators collapsed.

The Italian government has been criticised for not spending more to preserve the World Heritage area and other sites, and there have been calls for the culture minister to resign.

The government instead is calling for the private sector to step in to help preserve Italy’s buildings and artefacts.
