Melaka Heritage Tip :: Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple

The Sri Poyyatha, built in 1710, is a Hindu temple standing on the same street as Kampong Hulu Mosque and Cheng Hoon Teng temple. The coexistence of these three distinct faiths is a testament to the religious pluralism and tolerance of Melaka.

Erected in 1781, this temple enshrines the deity Vinayagar. In the back room is a sculpture of the deity with the head of an elephant and the body of a man with four hands. The deity is believed to be capable of removing obstacles in one’s life.

The temple stand of land donated by a Malacca Kapitan (headman) by the name of Thaivanayagam Chitty.
